We received a call reporting a case of a horse suffering
from severe neglect. We found Harry's Fun in a tidy paddock with a plentiful
supply of grass and fresh water. Despite this, he was severely malnourished.
On closer examination, Harry was found to have a rotten and deformed front
tooth. He was in extreme pain and unable to feed.
We immediately arranged for Harry to be brought to Whipalong where our
local vet, Dr Peter Rogers, operated on Harry and removed the tooth.
Harry appeared much happier and showed interest
in both grass and food concentrate. However, the following day he began to
show signs of colic.
Despite all attempts to save him his condition continued to decline and
Harry died the following morning.
The post mortem revealed his stomach had burst as a result of several
ulcers that had perforated the stomach lining. It also revealed a bacterial
infection of the liver, kidney and intestine caused by toxins released by
the rotten tooth.
